The envelope method is older than personal finance apps: at the start of the month, cash gets divided into labeled envelopes — groceries, transport, fun. When an envelope's empty, that category is done. Simple, brutal, effective.

Why cash worked

It worked because the limit was physical. You couldn't pretend you had more grocery budget — the envelope was empty. Apps lose this when balances blur into one number.

How to do it digitally

Open one checking account for fixed bills (rent, utilities, subscriptions) and one for everything variable. Within the variable one, use sub-accounts or category buckets in your bank app — most modern banks support this. Each bucket gets a monthly amount on payday.

The rule that keeps it honest

Spending only happens from a bucket. If groceries hit zero before month-end, you don't add more — you move from another bucket and feel that trade. The friction is the entire benefit.

The 3-bucket starter setup

Start simple: Bills, Groceries+Transport, Fun. Three is enough to see where money goes without becoming a chore. Add a fourth bucket only when one of the three keeps overshooting.

The envelope method survived a hundred years of personal finance because it doesn't need willpower — it uses structure instead. The medium changed; the principle hasn't.
